Since the birth of the first artificial diamond in our country in 1963 , the development of the super-hard materials and applications industry in China has gone through 40 years. Over the past 40 years, technology and quality of super-hard materials and applications in China has improved continuously. With the increasing product variety and expanding scale of production, a complete industrial system which is cross-sectoral, cross-region and with wide range and considerable size has been formed and a path of development of the super-hard materials and applications industry with Chinese characteristics was created. At present, China ranks first in diamond production of the world . As the world's largest producer of super-hard materials, China has obtained its rightful place in the world's super-hard materials industry. From 1998 to 2001, China's super-hard materials and applications industry in total output increased from the 400 million kt to 1,620 million kt, in which applications producation increased from 50 million kt to 290 million kt. The pace of development is encouraging. The power and purpose of the material development and application is the progress applications of the super-hard materials, and super-hard materials, as the major raw materials of the applications, its development provides a basis for the development of applicaitions. In recent years, superhard materials’ major progress achieved in the variety and quality are: High-grade single-crystal diamond, along with the large-scale diamond synthesis equipments, popularize in large scale of the powder and powdered carbon material catalyst synthesis technology, the development of new complex pressure transmission medium and the increasingly proportion of high strength diamond. One key enterprise are able to manufacture mass high-end products equivalent to BS950 or more, and the proportion of high-end products has reached 42%, with economic efficiency improved two-thirds.In terms of new varieties, there is a variety of diamond abrasive known as CSD , granular structure diamond, which is different from the traditional varieties of diamond in diamond crystal particles in which it is constituted by small particles. In the grinding process when the grinding force reaches a certain level, these small particles will produce tiny broken, and therefore the features of CSD is of good self-sharpening, sharp grinding , high efficiency, longer life, better surface quality. CSD abrasive is most suitable for processing hard alloy, and can also be used for glass and ceramics processing; most suitable for resin bonded abrasives and can also be used in bronze, ceramics, bonded abrasives. With the technology development of Cubic boron nitride (CBN) abrasive, two varieties of amber single crystals CBN abrasive with better strength and toughness, three varieties of CBN abrasive plated Ni, two varieties of powder CBN abrasive were developed on the basis of the last two varieties of the black crystals CBN abrasive. Nine species were formed, and the variety of CBN and its applications were greatly expanded. The future development trend of the 21st century will be the coming era of knowledge economy, knowledge and economic integration and global economic integration, which will not only bring us opportunities, but aslo challenges and the sense of threat. Faced with such challenges and opportunities in the industry, through the joint efforts of my colleagues, I believe that super-hard materials products in China will have greater development: (1)With the Continuous improvement of the preparation of raw materials, new bond, special production equipment, testing equipment,manufacturing technology of super-hard materials products will be greatly improved, new varieties will continue to emerge, products with high speed, high thickness, thin, complex surface features will continue to develop towards a higher level and product quality will be significantly improved. (2)Super-hard material products will be toward the serialization and standardization, professional direction, and the production companies will form their own product characteristics. (3)Technology of the super-hard material applications including CNC machine tools, finishing technology, special grinding fluid, etc. will be developed and improved. (4)The range of applications of super-hard material products will expand in the automotive, computer, microelectronics, optoelectronics, telecommunications, home appliances, new ceramic and other industries. CBN products will be more popular and developed. (5) As the world manufacturing center transfering to Chinese mainland, China's super-hard materials&applications in the next 10 years will have rapid development. The production will rank top in the world, and the technology will also stride forward world powers.
